The Weekly Word: Fill The Void
The weekly verse
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.”
Ephesians 5:8-9 (BSB)
the weekly question
“Where are you rooted?”
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)
This illustration of the tree illuminates the path of living a fearless & fruitful life in the Lord. We see that the tree’s roots are stretched out, therefore, it’s unaffected by drought. The tree is strategically planted by the water; thus, the heat leaves it unbothered. This tree isn't consumed with worry, nor does it ever fail to bear fruit, because the tree is ultimately secure in its root.
Jesus Christ is the Living Water that every Believer has access to (John 7:37-38). We also have the God-given capacity to stretch out in faith & draw upon the waters of God’s grace. And there’s no question, this is something that every Overcomer must learn to do. Every single one of us experiences the heat of this world and seasons of drought, however, we’re positioned to live above every fear & doubt. Come what may, we will never cease to bear good fruit—as long as Jesus Christ remains our Root.
the weekly Consideration
Every waking hour, there’s a spiritual battle that’s waged against our mind. Our enemy, the devil, knows the value of a misled mind. He knows that if he can get your attention, he can manipulate your affections. And ultimately, he can derail your life’s direction.
We have a daily choice as to whether we live deceived or delivered. We can live a life of darkness & hopeless confusion, or we can live in Light & hope-filled communion. If we’ll commit ourselves to walking in the Spirit of God, He will personally lead us into all truth (John 16:13). If we’ll set our sights on Jesus, The Truth, the Son will set us free indeed (John 8:36).
“With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. But that isn’t what you learned about Christ.
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”
Ephesians 4:17-18, 20-24 (NLT)
the weekly challenge
“fill the void”
In verses 12-15 of Philippians Ch. 2, we come across a plethora of revelation-insight. For starters, we find that salvation isn’t a lifeless theological concept. Salvation brings tangible results to the life of a Believer in Jesus Christ, and the Source of this power is traced back to God’s Spirit within us. He’s the One who creates a wellspring of grace, which empowers His children to follow The Father in authentic obedience.
We also find that our world is a generation chalked full of crookedness & perversion. This refers to every moral aspect of society that is “warped, misinterpreted, distorted, corrupted, and ultimately turned away from the purity of God’s purposes & plans” (BLB, Greek lexicon). Although the world has a tremendous void, we are uniquely positioned in Christ Jesus to fill it—which is why God’s people are called to live above reproach.
The goal isn’t for us to “go along to get along”, nor are we expected to act as arsonists regarding everything wrong we see. But in everything we do, we’re to demonstrate the undivided, uncompromising Kingdom of God. And as we continually submit ourselves to the Lordship of Christ, His glory illuminates our lives. We become bright lights in a dark world, and God uses us to draw people to eternal salvation through His Son.
“…Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”
Philippians 2:12-15 (NLT)
