The Weekly Word: The Right Response
The weekly verse
“And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. What then shall we say in response to these things?
Romans 8:28 (BSB)
the weekly questioN
How will you respond?
In the letter of 2 Peter, we find the Apostle Peter at a critical point in his life. Peter becomes aware that his own death is imminent, and the Spirit of Jesus confirms this to be true. Knowing death is knocking on his door, what does Peter do? He preaches.
“Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,”
2 Peter 1:12-14 (NLT)
Though Peter was living in his body, he was walking in the Spirit of God. Instead of caving to the natural desire to protect himself, he found a supernatural strength to continue pointing people back to Jesus. In verses 3-11, Peter hammers home the importance of living by the power of God’s promises, escaping a corrupt world-culture/sin, and bolstering our faith with a rich variety of Godly attributes. He reminds us to stand strong in the Truth of Jesus, and to live in the fullness of our God-given identity.
As disciples of Jesus, “how we respond” in our own critical moments really matters. Without question, now is the time to get in position, step outside of ourselves, & listen for the Lord’s leading. Now is the time to meet the needs of the spiritually thirsty, who desperately need the Living Water of Jesus Christ. Now is the time to seize the hour & walk in the Spirit of God’s power.
the weekly Consideration
Eternity is the only possible timeline for fully understanding the depth of Jesus’ teachings on The Kingdom, the miracles He performed, and the life He lived. And yet, despite all the mystery & complexity that surrounds Christ, there’s also a profound element of simplicity. For those who have spiritual “ears to hear & eyes to see” (Matthew 13:16), there's an ongoing revelation of how “all things” simply bring us back to Jesus Himself.
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.”
—Jesus (John 5:39-40, NLT)
Don’t allow a lack of understanding or answers to cause you to falter in your faith. Bear in mind that even Jesus’ original Apostles (whom He handpicked) failed to comprehend everything He conveyed. But like these followers of Christ, we can still anchor our faith in His ability to lead us into the realm of eternal life (John 6:68). And though the road to Everlasting Life is narrow, at the end of the day, The Son of God remains The Way.
the weekly challenge
Certify Your Calling
“Brothers and sisters, consider who you were when God called you to salvation. Not many of you were wise scholars by human standards, nor were many of you in positions of power. Not many of you were considered the elite when you answered God’s call...For he chose what is regarded as insignificant in order to supersede what is regarded as prominent...”
1 Corinthians 1:26, 28 (TPT)
In the world system of today, prominence & power are attributed to everything & everyone, except Jesus. The ultimate irony, of course, is the world is rejecting “The King of kings & Lord of lords, whose Kingdom will continue in unending measure” (Luke 1:33). Thus, the truth found in 1 Corinthians serves as a humbling reminder of the "upside-down" culture of The Kingdom of God.
This truth is also a powerful encouragement. It strengthens the faithful resolve of those who battle with feelings of insignificance & relative disregard as they follow Jesus’ footsteps. If you find the enemy trying to entrap you with such lies, let The Truth of God set you free. The truth is, the God of all creation personally called you to salvation. And He is now sanctifying you as one who has been “seated in Heavenly places with Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6).
If you have a divine burden to see God’s Kingdom revealed on earth as it is in Heaven, take heart, because Jesus says you are blessed (Jesus, Matthew Ch. 5). Don’t become weary in doing good, for a harvest of unimaginable righteousness will be received at the proper time. Disregard your desire for the approval of man, deny yourself, and certify your calling in Christ by walking in obedience to His Word.
“God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (NLT)
