The Weekly Word: An Enduring Legacy
The weekly verse
“…Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever…”
Psalm 112:1-4, 6-7, 9 (ESV)
the weekly question
What kind of legacy will you leave?
God has a desire for every single one of His children to be rich in the truest sense of the word. But true wealth isn’t “here today & gone tomorrow”, but rather, it’s enduring & spans multiple generations (Proverbs 13:22). In the economy of God’s Kingdom, wealth isn’t acquired through personal capability. Instead, wealth is reserved for those who operate in Godly faith & humility.
“The rewards of humility and the fear of the Lord are wealth and honor and life.”
Proverbs 22:4 (BSB)
Just as Jesus has freely given to us, we now have the privilege & responsibility to steward His Kingdom for the salvation of others. Through the leading of Christ’s Spirit, we can leverage every resource (time, treasure, & giftings) for the glory of God, the needs of others, & our future inheritance (1 Timothy 6:18-19). So long as we have today, we’re to be a blessing in the midst of people’s brokenness.
the weekly Consideration
“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.”
Romans 12:9-10 (NLT)
Leadership is something that God takes seriously. He’s the One who supplies us with every grace of ability, which is why God doesn’t concern Himself with the aptitude of a leader. However, He most certainly weighs our heart & holds us accountable for our attitude.
The Lord calls us to be authentic examples of Godly devotion & selflessness. We’re to turn away from all false pretention & religious obligation. And instead, we’re to shepherd with integrity & a commitment to the overall good of those under our care. We’re to treasure those entrusted to us, and to love them with the same depth of love that Christ Jesus has for us.
“Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t Lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.”
1 Peter 5:2-4 (NLT)
the weekly challenge
Make Way
John the Baptist was a forerunner (messenger) of Jesus, who was sent to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord. Scripture & the very words of Jesus attest to the fact that John was an uncommon man. He was set apart by virtue of his God-given calling, and he was even more distinguished by the virtue of his Godly character.
Like water in a hot desert, people were supernaturally drawn to John (Matthew Ch. 11). But it wasn’t because he was a people-pleaser who played to the crowd (verse 7). And it certainly wasn’t due to any self-promotion or materialistic attraction (verse 8). John was simply a vessel that was purified by the Holy Spirit, and as such, the Word of God was prophetically revealed in & through his life.
Though Jesus declared John as the greatest man to have ever lived (Matthew 11:11), John recognized the all-surpassing greatness of Jesus. Like all truly great people of God, he allowed his life to bear witness to the glory of God that resided in him. John didn’t waste his life by trying to make a name for himself; John made a way to the Author of Life, The Lord Jesus Christ.
“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
John 3:30 (NLT)
