Settle Your Soul (Part 1): Deep Assurance

deep assurance

Depth is a really important measure in life.

The depth of tread on your tires can be the difference between a safe-cruise or a serious crash. We grant degrees to people based on a certain depth of knowledge they acquire. Even our relationships are defined by the depth of our experiences with another person. God Himself designed us—

with a depth of spiritual need.

Like a hunger that goes unfulfilled, we all ache for something more than what this world has to offer. It’s a spiritual need that runs deep within us. It powerfully affirms Jesus’ words when He said, “man does not live on bread alone…but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

Our “deep need calls for a deep remedy”. God’s Word is our remedy. His Word is the very seed that the soil of our hearts need. In fact, Jesus told us that when the soil is right, His seed would produce a harvest of righteousness thirty, sixty, or even one-hundred times what was sown (Mark 4:20).

Make no mistake, God is still sowing in this season. He has a Word of Assurance for you today. It’s a seed that He wants to drive deeper into your heart. To grow into an assurance that silences every bit of doubt, discouragement & despair. His assurance is the seed—

To settle your soul.

fertile ground

There are two key principles to planting. Preparation and Time. If the soil of our hearts are going to produce as God intends, we need the right amount of preparation & time. The question is, how do we make that happen? How do we ensure we’re fertile soil for God’s favor?

“We” don’t.

Jeremiah 17:9 tells us the human heart is desperately sick & incurable. Left to our own devices, there is no hope for a change in our condition. But when we submit to the power of the Holy Spirit, we give God freedom to—

cultivate a Christ-Centered heart.

PREPARATION

As you continue reading in Mark Ch. 4, you soon discover the complexity of getting the soil right. There are four conditions listed. Three of which are incapable of holding onto the seed of God’s Word. They’re too dry, too shallow, or choked out by their surroundings.

these are the heart conditions of people.

We have to remember, God sees everything. God sees every weed, thorn, and problem that exists in the ground of our heart. The things you’re aware of & that which lurks beneath the surface. He knows exactly where His Seed needs to take root.

Why should we give God permission to prepare our hearts? Because He’s the only One capable of doing so. Because what God prepares is powerful. Because every seed He sows is Good.

and we want all god has for us.

When you give God permission to till the soil, He will do just that. Our God is faithful to work in the hearts of those surrendered to Him. If a single picture is worth a thousand words…how much greater is the worth of a single Word of God, planted deeply in the heart of His people?

Give God permission to do whatever work needs to be done. Be assured in the power of His preparation. Be assured that each day, you’ll become more like the people Jesus described in Matthew 5:6.

You’ll become a person “who hungers & thirsts for righteousness…and blessed are those people, for they will be satisfied”.

TIME

There are many examples of people who’ve foolishly assumed that God’s timing was anything less than perfect.

The many people who mocked Noah before the flood began.

Job’s wife mocked him for calling on God through unthinkable calamity.

People mocked & ridiculed Jesus as He endured the cross for our sake.

One of the greatest displays of faith can be the action of “waiting”. To make a conscious, faith-filled decision to wait on the Lord is often deemed “passive”. But those rooted in their faith know this couldn’t be further from the truth.

We know that God is not slow in keeping His promises as some understand slowness (2 Peter 3:9). That God uses time for the benefit of His people. We have assurance that His Word does not return void. Therefore—

we refuse to spoil the soil.

Instead, we give God time because the things that are worthwhile, take a while. We give God time because a faith that is tested is a faith that can be trusted (Craig Groeschel). We give God time because—

a waiting season is never a wasted season.

Everything & more

Romans 8:32 (NLT) asks a powerful question:

“Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?”

How is it possible to accept God’s Word of Assurance? Because we serve a God who did the impossible for us.

Through His Son Jesus, He lived a perfect life. Then He willingly & undeservedly sacrificed His Son to pay for our sin.

We have reassurance in knowing that only a loving Heavenly Father would ever do such a thing. Reassurance that, in Jesus, God has already given us everything.

everything & more.
