The Weekly Word: Fix Your Focus

The weekly verse

the weekly question

Do You see your opportunity?

Often times, our greatest opportunities appear as obstacles. On the surface, these “obstacle-illusions” present themselves as merely a problem, but in reality, they serve a purpose. Obstacles are opportunities for God to build your faith.

If “fear is a great motivator”, then it should come as little surprise that worldly fear challenges our calling the most. This is why we have to reject all forms of fear that stifle our faith in Jesus, and instead, give allowance to only a reverent, God-inspired fear.

The fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). The fear of The Lord leads you to rise above the fear of man (Matthew 10:28). Godly fear empowers you to seize the moment instead of shrinking from it (Hebrews 10:39).

Don’t miss your opportunity because you’re fixated on the obstacle. Let God reveal any fear that’s holding you back & allow the Holy Spirit to lead you through it. Give God the opportunity to elevate your faith. Make room for Jesus to deepen your dependence on Him.

“…when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

James 1:2-4 (NLT)

the weekly Consideration

Tension is temporary; God’s plans are permanent. Though seasons of struggle can be incredibly difficult, the truth is, they pale in comparison to His plans for us.

the weekly challenge

fix your focus

Long before Jesus picked up His physical cross, He carried the weight of the world on His shoulders. And yet, He never let the magnitude of His calling outweigh the Presence of God in His life. As Christ-followers, we tend to exalt the example of Jesus but fail to emulate Him. For some reason, the natural tendency is to treat Him as “an” example, instead of embracing the reality that He is “our” example. Thus, it becomes rather clear as to why we lose our sure-footing & fail to consistently walk on solid ground.

As Kingdom people, we unquestionably have responsibilities to serve & steward well within the scope of our God-given calling. As Jesus’ disciples, we too should constantly operate with respect for our duties & reverence for the One who’s assigned them. The problem is, we often fall into extremes when it comes to God's call on our life.

Many revere their work & create an idol of their “own righteousness”. Others have hyper-extended the grace of God to such an extent, there is blatant disregard for any sense of strong stewardship & Kingdom-minded responsibility. So how do we maintain a healthy respect for Christian responsibility & reverence for the God of Grace?

We Stay Connected To Christ.

Jesus told us: "those who remain in Him will properly produce, and those who don’t, won’t” (Jesus, John 15:5). It’s as simple as that. To deviate from Jesus is to go in a direction that’s ultimately foolish & eternally unfruitful. When the Lord graciously shows us “red flags” of deviation, we have to turn back & let Him restore us to the Path of Life. We should never camp-out in the realm of spiritual complacency, nor should we find ourselves drowning in unending strife.

Take time to be still & acknowledge your current-state in the body of Christ. Is the God of your Calling at the center-place of importance in your life? Give the Holy Spirit room to cultivate your heart to be more like Christ’s. Walk in the perfect peace that’s promised to those who fix their minds on Him (Isaiah 26:3).
